No fewer than 150 persons, rendered homeless by flood in the Northern zone of Bauchi State are currently taking refuge in a temporary IDPs camp set up by the government.
TIMELY POST reports that at least 50 houses and properties worth millions of Naira were destroyed by the flood caused by a heavy downpour in Disina District of Shira Local government area of Bauchi. The same incident also washed-up hundreds of farmlands and houses in Zaki and Gamawa local government areas Bauchi.
While assessing the flood situation which has continued to ravage communities in Bauchi State, the State Governor, Senator Bala Abdulkadir Mohammed pledged to come to the aid of the victims.
The Governor gave the assurance when he led top government officials on a sympathy visit to the District Head of Disina, Alhaji Abdullahi Mustapha in his palace on Saturday.
Bala Muhammad, who was represented by the Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Abubakar Suleiman who is Acting on his behalf since he traveled for the 2019 Hajj, said to ensure timely government intervention, the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) has already conducted assessment of the damages caused by the disaster and will act accordingly.
The Governor, sympathized with the victims of the flood disaster and urged them to consider it as an act of God, calling on them to take precautions by ensuring that water ways were not blocked.
The Member representing Disina Constituency at the State House of Assembly, Alhaji Saleh Hodi Disina expressed gratitude to the Governor for his quick response less than 24 hours of the incident.
Earlier, the District Head of Disina, Alhaji Abdullahi Disina said the major challenges facing the area is flood disaster and appealed for government’s support in that direction.
The District Head who said the recent flood disaster has affected houses and farmlands, suggested for immediate construction of culverts and drainages to avert recurrence of the incident.
While at Zaki Local Government, Senator Bala Mohammed expressed shock on the number of houses and properties affected by the flood disaster in the area.
On his part, the Caretaker Committee Chairman of the local government, Alhaji Yahuza Abdulkadir appealed for immediate government support to the victims in order to alleviate their sufferings.
Some of the victims interviewed explained that for over 10 years now, their lives have being threatened by the flood and called on the government to come to their aid.
Gunmen attack mourners in Benue, kill 4
The Benue Police Command has confirmed the killing of four persons in the early hours of Saturday at a burial in Tongov district of Katsina-Ala Local Government Area.
The commissioner of Police in the state, Mr Mukaddas Garba, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Saturday in Makurdi, that the incident occurred during the burial of one late Tor Amaafu.
Garba said the police had commenced investigation into the matter, assuring that the perpetrators would be brought to book.
He urged the public to assist the police with relevant information that would lead to the culprits arrest.
An eyewitness told NAN that the gunmen, who numbered over 10, opened fire on the mourners and killed many while others sustained injuries in the process.
Lawyer arraigned in court over Facebook post
A 59-year-old lawyer, Ogedengbe Oiseoruemi Ayodeji, has been arraigned before an Oredo Magistrate Court, for allegedly publishing false information on his Facebook account over Edo University, Iyamho.
The accused was arraigned on a four-count charge punishable under section 517,375, 517 and 59(1) of the Criminal Code, as applicable in Edo State.
The prosecuting counsel, Thomas Ojo, told the Court that on June 22, the accued and others now at large with the intent to injure the reputation of Edo University, Iyamho, unlawfully published a defamatory matter on his Facebook account name Ogedengbe Oisoruemi Ayodeji Uduanghe, titled ‘press statement Friday 21, June 2019, NUC revokes Edo University Iyamho, operating licences.’
“That you and others now at large did conspired among yourseles to publish fake news with intent to cause fear and alarm to the public, thereby committing the offence punishable under section 517 of the Criminal Code,” he said.
The accused pleaded not guilty to the charges in Court, while his counsel led by Peter E. Uwadiae pleaded with the Court to grant him bail.
Uwadiae who led 27 other cousel in the defence of the accused, told the Court that the accused is a legal practitioner and would not jump bail if granted.
He urged the Court to grant the accused bail on self recognition and that the Benin Branch of the Nigeria Bar Association will ensure that he attends trial.
The presiding magistrate, I .U. Iyoha granted the accused bail on self recognition and adjourned the case to September 3, for continuation of hearing.
Speaking with journalists after the case, the Public Relations Officer of the Edo University, Iyamho, Bar. Betcher Ekhosihun, said the institution is owned by the Edo state government and does not need an operating license but recognition by the National University Commission.
“The issue of establishing university in Nigeria is on concurrent list and that gives power to both the federal and state government to establish university, once that is done, they write to the NUC, that will issue recognition to the university and Edo University which is the 41 state university has that recognition,” he said.
He cautioned people against publishing fake and unverified news in social media, as the law will definitely catch up with them.
Police arrest suspected gang-members with police gun
Police in Anambra State have arrested five members of a robbery syndicate, whose member was earlier nabbed with a Beretta pistol belonging to the police, last week.
The initial suspect, Sunday Onyema had been arrested in Onitsha while driving a bus in the wee hours of the morning from Asaba to Onitsha.
A press release by the spokesperson of the Anambra Police command stated that Onyema was suspected to be a member of a one-chance syndicate.
Haruna in a release made available to DAILY POST said five suspects suspected to be working with Onyema have been apprehended.
He said, “It would be recalled that on the 7th August, 2019 at about 6.47am, puff-adder operatives in conjunction with patrol team attached to operation kpochapu while on stop and search duty at Upper Iweka in Onitsha intercepted a bus with registration number UKP- 108-ZU coming from Asaba and after a thorough search they recovered a Police Beretta pistol with breech number AO-4909Z loaded with seven rounds of life ammunition, one expanded ammunition and Six different handsets in possession of one Sunday Onyema ‘m’ aged 35years of orlu in Imo State.
“Discreet investigation by Police detectives attached to the Command Special Anti Robbery Squad (SARS) further led to the arrests of five additional suspects who belonged to the same syndicate at different locations within Orlu LGA of Imo State, Nsukka in Enugu State and Oba in Idemili South LGA of Anambra State.
“The suspects are Felix Chukwujiama ‘m’ aged 33 years of Oba, Anambra State, Oluchukwu Anyafule ‘m’ aged 32 years of Oba Anambra State, Ikechukwu Ibezim ‘m’ aged 35 years of Nkwelle, Orlu,Imo State, Ikechukwu Igwe ‘m’ aged 35 years of Orlu Imo State and, Emeka Mama ‘m’ aged 34 years of Nsukka Enugu State respectively.”
Haruna said exhibits recovered from the suspects in addition to the barreta pistol ealier recovered includes, One English chief revolver pistol, One locally made double barrel pistol, Five live cartridges and one .9mm live ammunition.
He said the suspects would be charged to court at the conclusion of investigation.
